YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER ****

...and the next Woody Allen movie will be even better than the latter ! Didn’t read that in my crystal ball but it is a fact that Woody Allen is back in shape and has been for a while. Who am I to say? Well, I think I’ve been a fan and a follower of Woody for so long that I almost feel I have shared his couch and some of his existential struggles. I was losing hope when “Scoop” came along and what followed brought my faith back : “Match Point” was a hint, “Whatever works” was a sign and Vicky Christy Barcelona confirmed it. What I like the most about Woody Allen’s last films are the twists of fate (almost Rohmerians) he chooses to tackle with a lighter hand than before. In “You will meet…” the destinies of a few losers go haywire thanks to a few predictions made by a clairvoyant but in the end, it is not the belief in the predictions that matters, it is the power of people and how manipulative they can be that prevail, with a few winks from brother fate and sister destiny. The casting of the film is amazing: from Noami Watts (half angel half devil) to Antonio Banderas (half soft half hard), Anthony Hopkins (half soft half hard but for other reasons!), the fabulous Gemma Jones (seen in many Jane Austen adaptations), Josh Brolin (half Doc half Dopey), Lucy Punch (ahhhh Charmaine!) there is not a discordance in this conterto of wrong doings which ends up to be much more entertaining than you expect.

...et le prochain Woody Allen sera encore meilleur que le précédent ! Je ne l’ai pas vraiment vu dans ma boule de cristal mais c’est un fait que Woody Allen est en pleine forme et ceci depuis quelques films. Qui suis-je pour en décider? Je suis fan de Woody Allen et je suis son travail depuis si longtemps que j’ai presque le sentiment d’avoir partagé son divan et ses angoisses existentielles. Je commençais à désespérer quand “Scoop” est arrivé et ce qui a suivi m’a redonné espoir : “Match Point” était un indice, “Whatever works” un signe certain que Vicky Christy Barcelona n’a fait que confirmer. Ce que je préfère dans les derniers films de Woody Allen, ce sont ces clins d’oeil au destin (très Rohmériens dans le fond mais pas dans la forme) avec lesquels Woody Allen s’amuse à jongler mais avec des boulettes de mie de pain. Dans “You will meet…” le destin de quelques bons à rien se retrouve compromis par quelques prédictions de voyante de quincaillerie mais au fond, ce ne sont pas ces prédictions qui importent mais le pouvoir de manipulation des uns et des autres là où on l’attend le moins. Le casting du film est magnifique: de Noami Watts (mi-ange mi démon) à Antonio Banderas ( dur mou), Anthony Hopkins (dur mou aussi mais pour d’autres raisons!), la fabuleuse Gemma Jones (une abonnée à Jane Austen), Josh Brolin (machiavélique simplet), Lucy Punch (ahhhh Charmaine!) il n’y a aucune discordance dans ce conterto de pieds nickelés qui s’avère beaucoup plus divertissant qu’on ne le pensait.

WHATEVER WORKS ***

Chateau Woody Allen 2009 ! Woody Allen is indeed like a good wine aging well. His "Whatever works" sometimes sounds like an improv. session going a bit too long (George Carlin anyone?) but it is funny and witty. It is strange to think that Woody Allen can still make us laugh at the absurdity of life and the stupidity of the "neanderthals", that he can make jokes about sending the kids to concentration camp since "there is camp for anything these days" and goes from sophisticated diatribes about the "cretins", the "cretans", the "idiots" to 3rd grade level jokes (they work very well too). Whatever Works is about Boris Yellnikov (avatar of Woody played by a wonderful Larry David), a grumpy genius who runs into a very young beauty queen, scrumptious Evan Rachel Wood, from the South by accident and a few gumbos later is a changed man, still grumpy but changed ! Like most Woody Allen's films, the film is really about love, chance, fate , it is about life. Can't wait for the next chapter.

Très bon cru Chateau Woody Allen 2009 ! Woody Allen est de plus en plus comme un bon vin qui s'améliore en vieillissant. Son "Whatever works" ressemble parfois à un one-man show de comédie (dans le style de George Carlin) mais c'est drôle et intelligent. C'est étrange de penser que Woody Allen peut toujours nous faire rire avec l'absurdité de la vie et la stupidité des "néanderthals", qu'il peut faire des blagues sur envoyer les enfants en camp de concentration puisqu'il y a des camps pour tout et n'importe quoi et passe facilement de diatribes sophistiquées sur le niveau intellectuel du pékin américain moyen à des blagues de maternelle. Whatever Works tourne autour du nombril d'un vieux savant grognon -formidable Larry David en xième avatar de Woody-, qui rencontre par accident une jeune beauté sudiste -Evan Rachel Wood- et quelques gumbos plus tard devient un nouvel homme, toujours aussi grognon mais moins enclin à se jeter par la fenêtre à tous les coins de rue. Mais comme dans tous les films de Woody Allen, c'est surtout un film sur la vie, l'amour, la chance, le hasard et la nécessité, typique Woody Allen et on attend impatiemment le prochain.

VICKY, CRISTINA, BARCELONA *****

The last Woody Allen movie is full of love: love for the city of Barcelona, love for architecture, women, photography, music, love for love. It is an exhilarating, funny and sometimes moody movie. Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem make one of these explosive couples that are hard to forget with a burning the screen kind of chemistry. Penelope Cruz is absolutely brilliant, the way she is in Almodovar’s movies and she is not the shadow of herself she has been in the lame attempts made by Hollywood to tame her. With Scarlett Johansson, Woody has definitely found a muse and she blooms under his direction. Strangely enough the role of Vicky is played by Rebecca Hall (also brilliant) who was in the Prestige with Scarlett Johansson. Woody Allen remains, film after film, one of the few directors whose work is worth following. I had the strange feeling that the women were all dressed in Forever 21 but it could be my imagination ! As always in Woody Allen’s films, the music matches the mood and part of the soundtrack includes one of my favorite “oldies” : Entre dos Aguas by Paco de Lucia... Memories, memories !!! Le dernier film de Woody Allen parle d’amour : amour d’une ville, d’une architecture, des femmes, de la photographie. de la musique, amour de l’amour même celui qui fait mal! C’est un film vivant, drôle, poignant et un peu mélancolique aussi. Penelope Cruz et Javier Bardem forment un de ces couples explosifs difficiles à oublier et leur compatibilité crève littéralement l'écran. Penelope Cruz est géniale, comme elle l’est souvent dans les films d’Almodavar et pas du tout dans les films Américains qui n’ont su jamais exploiter que son ombre. Avec Scarlett Johansson, Woody a trouvé sa muse et elle s’épanouie comme une fleur sous la direction du réalisateur qui reste quand même, film après film un des rares réalisateurs à suivre inconditionnellement. A noter aussi Rebecca Hall excellente dans le rôle de Vicky et, chose étrange elle partageait déjà l'affiche avec Scarlett Johansson dans The Prestige. J’ai eu l’étrange impression que toutes les actrices du film étaient habillées en Forever 21 mais c'est peut-être mon imagination ou que le budget de Woody s'amenuise! Comme toujours dans les films de Woody Allen, la musique colle à l’ambiance et la bande originale du film comprend un de mes morceaux préférés de Paco de Lucia: Entre dos Aguas... souvenirs, souvenirs!!!
