ELEGY **

Adapted from Philip Roth’s novel “The Dying Animal”, Elegy is a slow moving life/love story between an aging professor (Ben Kingsley) and a charming young American Cuban student (Penelope Cruz) 30 some years his junior. It’s very much about aging and growing up versus growing old and it is somewhat interesting but never, in my opinion, moving or revolutionary. Of course, I am not one to be shocked by any love combination so I might not be the best judge : young love, old love, crazy love, proper love... still love. I couldn’t care less about the age difference which I found neither shocking nor revolting, only borderline boring. Dennis Hopper gives a great performance as George, the professor’s best friend who declares at one point : “I am tired of playing Horatio to your third rate Hamlet” which I understood as tired of playing the cheese to the omelet, or the dot to the “i”, or the Laurel to the Hardy, or the Wallace to the Gromit, or the Capitaine Haddock to the Tintin and on and on and on... It just means playing confidant actually. Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz were probably not the best match for this movie even though both are terrific actors.

Adapté du roman de Philip Roth “The Dying Animal”, Elegy est un film lent sur les amours d’un professeur vieillissant qui se refuse à grandir et une jeune beauté Cubaine Américaine (Penelope Cruz) 30 et quelques années plus jeune que lui. Le film n’a rien ni de très émouvant ni de très révolutionnaire. Je ne suis pas du genre à être choquée par la différence d’âge et je pars du principe que quand il s’agit d’amour il n’y a pas de règles : amour jeune, vieux, fou, passionné... tant qu’il n’est ni violent ni mortel, en amour, tous les coups sont permis (passez moi l’expression) ! Dennis Hopper joue merveilleusement George, le meilleur ami du professeur, qui a un moment déclare : “J’en ai assez de jouer les Horatio pour ton Hamlet de contrebande” ce qui en clair signifie qu’il en a assez de jouer la cerise du gâteau, le ponpon du bonnet, le Haddock du Tintin etc... de jouer les confidents et les foreign ear quoi ! Ben Kingsley et Penelope Cruz (tous deux excellents) n’étaient peut-être pas la bonne paire pour jouer dans ce film qui n’est ni bon ni mauvais.
