PUBLIC ENEMIES ***

Johnny Depp is Dillinger and one of the Public Enemies in Michael Mann's new film. Set in Chicago in the midst of the Great Depression, the film does little to convey the atmosphere of gloom that must have wrapped the city in those days. Johnny Depp (brutally magnifico) is a great Dillinger though, Christian Bale (psycho repressed) is the cop determined to catch Dillinger "dead or dead" and Marion Cotillard (looking strangely like Vanessa Paradis) is Johnny's sweetheart, blackbird, whatever.
With this trio, Michael Mann had gold in his hands and he could have made a classic. We all know that Dillinger didn't make it to retirement age so his death was worth a cinematographic coup. Think Godard's Breathless and one of the best ending any movie gangster could dream of along with Bonnie and Clyde's death in the hands of Arthur Penn and Scarface's death choreographed by Brian de Palma. Dillinger's death doesn't come close but Johnny Depp is brilliant, Christian Bale is terrific and Marion Cotillard shines.

Johnny Depp est Dillinger et un des "Public Enemies" dans le nouveau film de Michael Mann. L'action sanglante se passe à Chicago au coeur de la grande dépression, mais le film ne parvient pas à recréer l'atmosphère chargée qui devait régner à cette époque. Johnny Depp (brutalement magnifique) est un Dillinger cependant crédible, Christian Bale (psycho réprimé) est le policier déterminé à le capturer "mort ou mort" et Marion Cotillard (qui pour l'occasion à de vagues airs de Paradis) est l'amoureuse de Johnny, son blackbird, son petit piaf quoi !
Avec ce trio, Michael Mann avait de l'or dans les mains et aurait pu nous offrir un classique. On sait tous que Dillinger n'a jamais pu atteindre l'âge de la retraite, et sa mort aurait pu être un coup cinématographique fumeux. Pensez à l"A bout de souffle de Godard et une des plus belles fins q'un gangster en cinémascope ait pu rêver, ou même à Bonnie and Clyde dans le film de Arthur Penn sans parler de la mort de Scarface orchestrée par Brian de Palma. La mort de Dillinger est bien loin d'atteindre ces sommets mais Johnny Depp est brillant, Christian Bale hallucinant et Marion Cotillard brille de tous ses petits feux.
