BRIDESHEAD REVISITED **

There is something fascinating in watching an upper class English family in the thrall of love, guilt, lost of faith, closet issues and god knows what other kind of existential torment they submit themselves to, but after a while you kind of think that what is wonderful in literature becomes a bore when it takes the form of a too long PBS type of drama. The latest movie version of Brideshead Revisited is cold as a frozen popsicle in spite of its glorious photography and brilliant actors. In terms of film making, it lacks imagination and therefore feels as flat as a haddock. That said, it made me long for England ( a country I love) and took me back to my memories... God knows I had time to let my mind wander while Charles was busy chasing Julia in the hallways or when Sebastian was touring the grounds of the estate. Goodness gracious me, I am not sure Brideshead needed that much to be revisited. Maybe reading the novel again is a better option.

C’est fascinant de voir une famille aristo Anglaise aux prises avec les tourments de l’amour, de la religion, du placard, de la foi et dieu sait quels autres problèmes existentiels mais après un temps, ce qui fonctione très bien en littérature ne passe pas forcément à l’écran. La dernière version cinématographique de Retour à Brideshead est froide comme un findus malgré ses décors fabuleux et sa distribution éclatante. En termes de cinématographie, pas trop d’originalité et le film est aussi plat qu’une limande. Cela dit, le film m’a permis de revenir dans mes souvenirs de l’Angleterre qui est un pays que j’adore. J’ai eu grandement le temps de le faire pendant que Charles était en train de courir après Julia, que Sebastian était en train de faire le tour du propriétaire ou quand tout un chacun se prenait la tête avec l’état d’âme du jour... bref, je ne suis pas sûre qu’il était à ce point nécessaire de retourner à Brideshead, un aller simple aurait largement suffit ou relire le roman peut-être.
