TROPIC THUNDER ***

Why do you think the studios would give priority to the women for a preview of Tropic Thunder? Because there is not one woman in sight in the entire movie (apart from Asian older women extras and one air stewardess) ? Because it is a macho, stupid, hilarious, gross, vulgar, offensive, ridiculous and hysterical spoof on Hollywood and war movies maybe... I don’t know but I have the feeling Tropic Thunder is a hard one to sell which is too bad since it is probably the funniest movie I have seen in a long time : Hollywood is a circus of freaks but they are fun to watch. Tom Cruise might be taking his sweet revenge on all the big cheeses that have snubbed him but he is frightingly great in the role of the producer. Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Nick Nolte, an incredible Robert Downey Junior, and all the actors of this spoof about a bunch of marketable Hollywood stars making a war movie are just exceptional and plain nuts. All the taboo subjets are rubbed in your face: religion, war, politics, money, power, drugs, obesity, handicaps.... you name it! When Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen get together to write a script they more than rock the boat ... they manage to really nuke the fridge! Don’t miss...By the way, the only people who should really be offended by this movie are movie stars and the head of the studios... they can take it !

Batman The Dark Knight/ Le Chevalier Noir

Batman movies are usually classified as action movies SHEBAMMMMM but there should be another category for the franchise... Marvies perhaps since most of them are adaptation of comic books published by Marvel (WOOPS..... DC COMICS ALSO BUT MARVEL IS LIKE KLEENEX ISN'T IT? YOOOOOOFFFFFF...) which morphed into cartoons before making it ito the big screen. They are truly a form of art though and quite beautiful to watch WOW-they are also big money making machines of course, perhaps the biggest money machines the studios ever had. The latest Batman flix, The Dark Knight is a beautiful one. Heath Ledger is one of the best villains in movie history : a dash of M. (Peter Lorre) by Fritz Lang AARGHHHHHH, a sliver of Nosferatu by Murnau KREEEEEESH and a good dose of Jack of Kubricks’ The Shining YOOF and you have a perfect joker! The fact that Heath ledger added some his own natural talent and a little bit of Jerry McGuire is actually a touch of genius : “you complete me”... says the joker to the police commissioner Gordon! He is perfect but that said, Batman is a real good ensemble piece and like a puzzle, the pieces wouldn’t go together without the performances of all the actors, from Michael Caine to Morgan Freeman, Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhardt, Maggie Gillenhall etc... CLAP ! CLAP! CLAP! Beats Mamma Mia! , needless to say. Actually Mamma Mia! made the preview of the House Bunny look good... it says it all.
See for yourself (and I know it is pitiful but it does make me laugh!)

CLAP! CLAP!

My blueberry nights (and pie)

My blueberry nights by Wong Kar Wai is a mess. Dommage! I have seen all his films and I admire most of them. He is a magician and his films all have a texture, a range of colors and a flavor that make them altogether beautiful and personal. The story of My blueberry nights is very thin but that’s OK, it’s not a reason for failure. The actors are great but they don’t seem to belong. I recognized the scores of The Motorcycle diaries and In the mood for love and they definitely do not belong to this movie. In a way, it felt that the movie was a kind of jetsam flotsam can do better assignment… is it what happens when a foreign talent bows to the studios? I don’t want to turn Ang Lee’s knife into Hulk’s wound but I wonder. Even the pie looked fake. Try My blueberry pie instead!
2 lbs blueberries
2 eggs
3/4 cup all purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup heavy cream
2 teaspoons almond extract

1. Preheat oven to 400 F.
2. Butter and flour a 2 quart baking dish. Place the berries in the dish and think about what other fruit you could use for this recipe.
3. In a medium bowl, combine flour and sugar politely.
4. In a small bowl, combine eggs, cream, and almond extract. Whisk until well blended. Make a well and a wish in the center of the flour mixture. Whisk in the egg mixture to form a smooth operator. Go take a nap for 15 to 20 minutes.
5. Wake up. Pour the batter over the berries and bake until the surface looks like a lake at sunset minus the mosquitoes, 25 to 30 mins.
6. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature

Too bad! ? Même le gâteau avait l’air faux. Essayez plutôt mon Blueberry Pie à moi !
900 grammes de myrtilles/bleuets/baies
2 oeufs
150 grammes farine
150 grammes sucre
250 ml crème liquide épaisse
2 petites cuillers d’extrait d’amande

1. Préchauffer le four à 204 degrés (four chaud).

Baby did a bad bad thing...

I saw Chris Isaak in concert last Saturday and I was so close to him I could have touched him (assuming I have ginormous long arms). He hasn’t aged a bit since the HOT video of Wicked Game

http://youtube.com/watch?v=XXmlJQN5Pm8&feature=related

and he is still charming, funny, talented and pretty handsome. He is not as tall as I thought he was and talking about that, Chris Isaak sang the famous ‘Baby did a bad bad thing’ which was in the soundtrack of one of my favorite movies, Eyes Wide Shut by Stanley Kubrick with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. According to my sources (non verified) Chris Isaak is going to be in a movie adaptation of one Bret Easton Ellis novel called The Informers along with a bunch of "geezers" (30+ according to -20) : Winona Ryder, Billy Bob Thornton, Mickey Rourke, etc. Hopefully it will be more memorable than his role in Little Buddha back in 1993. If not, it’s OK, we’ll always have Wicked game...
If you want to find more about Chris Isaak, check http://www.chrisisaak.com/ and Bob's your uncle...

http://youtube.com/watch?v=XXmlJQN5Pm8&feature=related

Wanted

What is it about Wanted ? Its director is from the former USSR, Kazakhstan (like Borat) and his name is Timur Bekmanbetov. The movie definitely has a different flavor from your usual Marvel Comic Book adaptation. I really wanted to see a bit of Raskolnikov in the hero, Wesley Gibson (played by James McAvoy the Scottish lad of Atonement) : after all, he almost kills -with a revolver which could have been an ax- , his mean boss who could have been his landlady ! I also wanted to see a bit of Karma in Wanted : remember Matrix and how related to Buddhism the whole movie was (if you have any questions about this… feel free : I know the authority on the subject !) and the same can more or less be applied to Wanted (past events, fate, loom, weaving, destiny, awareness of the suffering caused by the destruction of life ). Wanted also has a bit of Shakespeare in it : there is definitely a hint of Hamlet in this conflict between father, son and uncle if you can believe that Sloan (Morgan Freeman) is Wesley’s uncle… a bit of a stretch maybe! What about Nirvana then? I thought there was definitely something of Nirvana in the movie since there is a definite “smells like teen spirit” atmosphere. Anyhow and in a nutshell, Angelina is great : she glows, she shines, she levitates 3000 feet above us poor simple human beings, James McEvoy is adorable and going to the movies beats the heat !

Wall-E

I know, I know… pathetic isn’t it? Some people climb the Himalayas, others go on Safari in Tanzania, party in the Hamptons or sail in the Caribbean and I go see Wall-E! Even worse, I like it and worst of all I fall in love with a coackroach ! I used to hate cockroaches ; found them plain disgusting. I despise the squishy sound they make when you flatten them with a shoe which I refuse to do because what’s left behind could turn you into a vegan forever ; after all, they are meaty! Arghhhhhh... Luckily, I live in a dry climate where roaches are rare (and I have the best recipe to get rid of them anyway). The recipe is -for reasons not so clear to me- kept in my cookbook (along with a recipe for Gak which I will provide on demand). So all you need is boric acid (purchased in drugstores), oil, flour and sugar in equal proportion. Mix until you get the consistency of cookie dough. Roll little balls of dough the size of peas, hide them in the path of the roaches, they’ll never show up again and Bob’s your uncle ! Of course now that I have seen Wall-E, I have second thoughts about murdering my new friends , I think I might actually like them from now on. What Pixar studios did with rats (see Ratatouille) and roaches is unthinkable. They actually take the most unwanted characters and make them lovable… I mean, robots, rats, roaches… they are on a roll! Maybe they can move on the next letter of the alphabet and tackle serpents, sewers, spatulas, steaks… whatever take their fancy. These guys can turn anything into a fluffy loving sweetie pie of a honeybunny. And I kid you not, when Wall-E drove over his pal the roach by accident the whole theatre went “oh nooooooooo”. See I am not the only one who is kind of brain dead this Summer. It’s reassuring!

The Children Of Huang Shi

The Children Of Huang Shi belongs to the strange family of films suffering from schizophrenia: they don’t know if they are biopics, romance, drama, historical or adventure. As a result, the actors act dazed and confused and in this case, it is most welcome since the heroin is a nurse who is also a drug addict (oxymoron?) and the hero is a journalist who is also the ridiculously adorable Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Based on a true story (by movie standards, a real curse), it tells the story of George Hogg (Rhys Meyers) a proper English journalist and gentleman lost in the battle of Nanjing (aka Nanking) who by a turn of fate escorts 60 orphaned children 700 miles through the Liu Pan Shan Mountains. The Nanking massacre is a somehow not very well known event which took place during the Japanese occupation of China. The Children of Huang Shi starts with this horrific event and moves away from it pretty fast. It is surely not movie material - unless the only novel I know based on it : The Devil of Nanking by Mo Hayder, becomes a film. This is one of the rare books that gave me nightmares so I don’t really recommend it.
There is not much to say about the Children of Huang Shi. It is paved with good intentions and as long as the great wall of China. It has opium, crickets and kites because that’s how you know it’s a movie set in China… Like you know it’s a movie set in France because it has bread, wine and pretty girls. Or an Italian movie because it has pasta, gucci and la Belucci. Or (and on and on and on... fill the blanks yourself: pick a country and three words, it's easy).
I know I fell asleep a few times and woke up confused not to see Jonathan Rhys Meyers with his hot hoop tights chasing the Boleyn on Showtime but it’s because I have been obsessed by the Tudors lately. I know… she is dead but there are five more to go!

OUR DAILY BREAD

Director: Nikolaus Geyrhalter (available in DVD, playing on the Sundance channel)

Here is a movie I wish I hadn't seen but which could actually work wonders for people who are trying to loose weight ! Trust me… watching this film will cut your appetite for a few hours, so and if you watch it daily you might be able to shed a few pounds just in time for Summer vacation ! There is no commentary at all in this documentary which basically shows you where food comes from. It should be a joyful yummy experience but it is not. From the tomatoes to the apples, the salt or the cucumbers, it is all very painful and everything but appealing. Wait until I DON’T tell you about chickens, pigs, cows… even fish! Major huge traumatic scary movie! I don’t even want to think about it. Noone made me watch it and I have to admit that I was a bit hypnotized by it: perhaps because of the lack of commentary (which was totally unnecessary by the way : never images have been so explicit). I kept on watching because I felt stupid not knowing… Not knowing where the stuff you put in your mouth comes from is a bit like using words without knowing their meaning. So and now that I know that there is such a thing as a huge vacuum- cleaner on wheels that sucks chickens up in order to spit them on the other side in crates and that some clever people actually invented these machines, I don’t think I’ll eat chicken for a while. Now that I have seen with my own eyes that cows DO know that they are going to be slaughtered and I have seen the fear in their eyes, I don’t want to eat meat anymore. And I am not telling you about the tomatoes: I had the feeling their screams were just silenced by the clouds of pesticide sprayed by obese versions of the Michelin man workers with their protective gear which looked almost as if they were working in nuclear plants! OK, I might be exaggerating a little bit but it’s easier to tell you about the tomatoes, take my word for it. Once the animals are food, they couldn’t care less anyway but the sadness of the food workers remains : it seems to be a hell of a job, literally speaking.
On a last note, this film is from the Netherlands and most of it is filmed in Europe. An American version of it could prove itself lethal!

Réalisateur:
Nikolaus Geyrhalter

The Karma and Mrs Stone

One shouldn’t use karma lightly. See what happened to Sharon Stone in Cannes. She declared, in a microphone and with a camera in her face (your shortest way to YouTube) that the earthquake in China might have something to do with karma… By “karma” you have to hear retaliation, vengeance, payback, and basically something along the lines of “it will teach them to do no good to the Tibetans”. Sharon Stone is no Ban ki-Moon and she is not the ambassador of the USA, but she is one of Dior’s ambassadors ! She is paid loads of money for it therefore she has to be pretty careful about how she looks and what she says. Seems to be at least as challenging as playing in a remake of Basic Instinct. Not only is the karma comment one of the dumbest things ever said but it’s stretching the notion of karma a bit too far. Only to give you an example, don’t you think that America has enough in the karma bank to be eradicated from the map of the earth along with most of the so-called civilized countries? It was just a dumb statement made by a movie star who is an exception in Hollywood since she doesn’t do movies that much but is still a movie star. What is even more surprising is Dior’s reaction : Sharon Stone has been one of the "faces" of Dior for some time but in the aftermath of the karma incident, the ad campaigns portraying Sharon Stone have stopped and her contract is in great jeopardy. I am not sure that the fact that the victims of the earthquake are going to stop buying Capture Totale and Rinse-off Cleansing foam … not talking about Skinflash radiance is going to make much of a difference but it’s a fact. No more Sharon in China, karma or not, she might have to switch brands.
I am talking Karma Stone because there is not much I have to say about the movies this week. I have seen some and I am kind of sorry I did. Try to see The Fall when it is finally released (movie theatre or DVD). Directed by Tarsem (who directed The Cell with Jennifer Lopez), it is a visual feast without much special effects and therefore truly magic. One of the main characters is a little 5 year old Romanian actress who is the best actress I’ve seen in a long time.
