TROPIC THUNDER ***

Why do you think the studios would give priority to the women for a preview of Tropic Thunder? Because there is not one woman in sight in the entire movie (apart from Asian older women extras and one air stewardess) ? Because it is a macho, stupid, hilarious, gross, vulgar, offensive, ridiculous and hysterical spoof on Hollywood and war movies maybe... I don’t know but I have the feeling Tropic Thunder is a hard one to sell which is too bad since it is probably the funniest movie I have seen in a long time : Hollywood is a circus of freaks but they are fun to watch. Tom Cruise might be taking his sweet revenge on all the big cheeses that have snubbed him but he is frightingly great in the role of the producer. Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Nick Nolte, an incredible Robert Downey Junior, and all the actors of this spoof about a bunch of marketable Hollywood stars making a war movie are just exceptional and plain nuts. All the taboo subjets are rubbed in your face: religion, war, politics, money, power, drugs, obesity, handicaps.... you name it! When Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux and Etan Cohen get together to write a script they more than rock the boat ... they manage to really nuke the fridge! Don’t miss...By the way, the only people who should really be offended by this movie are movie stars and the head of the studios... they can take it !
Pourquoi est-ce que les studios se donneraient la peine de donner la priorité aux femmes pour la projection de Tropic Thunder en avant-première? Est-ce parce que il n’y pas de femmes du tout dans ce film (à part quelques figurantes Asiatiques et une hôtesse de l’air qui passe avec un plateau dans l’avion)? Est-ce parce que c’est le film le plus lourd, idiot, vulgaire, hilarant, stupide, ridicule et irresistible qu’on aie vu depuis longtemps? Le fait est que ça marche ! Cette parodie d’Hollywood et de sa connerie intrinsèque est réussie : Hollywood est un cirque de malades et ces malades sont drôles à regarder. Tom Cruise qui prend peut-être ici sa revanche bien méritée sur les huiles des studios qui l’ont évincés est parfait en caricature de producteur odieux (et répugnant)... c’est probablement son meilleur rôle depuis Magnolia. Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Nick Nolte, un incroyable (et pratiquement méconnaissable) Robert Downey Junior, ainsi que tous les acteurs de cette parodie de film de guerre sont excellents. Les répliques volent bas mais pas un sujet n’est épargné de la religion, au pouvoir en passant par la drogue, le sexe, les gros, les handicapés, j’en passe et des meilleures. Quand Ben Stiller, Justin Theroux et Etan Cohen collaborent à l’écriture d’un script ils cassent la baraque et s’arrangent pour vraiment nuker le frigo! A ne pas manquer... A propos, les seuls personnes qui pourraient se sentir offensés par ce film sont les stars de cinéma et les dirigeants des studios.... rien de grave!

SPECIAL... RECIPE FOR
Lame duck salad (you can do it!)

Ingredients:

Cooked tasteless chicken breasts (or duck if you insist but I don't eat Uncle Donad)
Cabbage sliced julienne
Mushrooms
3 carrots sliced julienne
Fresh mint leaves

Shallots finely chopped
2 TBS rice vinegar
2TBS nuoc mam or fish sauce
1 TBS lime juice
1 hot chili pepper finely chopped

Mix everything, let it rest and serve fresh

Ingrédients
Blancs de poulet sans trop de gout (ou de canard si vous insistez mais moi je mange pas de Donald)
Chou blanc en julienne
Champignons (optionnel)
3 carottes en julienne
Feuilles de menthe fraiche

Echalotes finement hâchées
2 cuillers à soupe de vinaigre de riz
2 cuillers à soupe de nuoc mam
1 cuiller à soupe de jus de citron vert
1 piment coupé très fin

Mélangez le tout, laissez reposer et servez frais.

Batman The Dark Knight/ Le Chevalier Noir

Batman movies are usually classified as action movies SHEBAMMMMM but there should be another category for the franchise... Marvies perhaps since most of them are adaptation of comic books published by Marvel (WOOPS..... DC COMICS ALSO BUT MARVEL IS LIKE KLEENEX ISN'T IT? YOOOOOOFFFFFF...) which morphed into cartoons before making it ito the big screen. They are truly a form of art though and quite beautiful to watch WOW-they are also big money making machines of course, perhaps the biggest money machines the studios ever had. The latest Batman flix, The Dark Knight is a beautiful one. Heath Ledger is one of the best villains in movie history : a dash of M. (Peter Lorre) by Fritz Lang AARGHHHHHH, a sliver of Nosferatu by Murnau KREEEEEESH and a good dose of Jack of Kubricks’ The Shining YOOF and you have a perfect joker! The fact that Heath ledger added some his own natural talent and a little bit of Jerry McGuire is actually a touch of genius : “you complete me”... says the joker to the police commissioner Gordon! He is perfect but that said, Batman is a real good ensemble piece and like a puzzle, the pieces wouldn’t go together without the performances of all the actors, from Michael Caine to Morgan Freeman, Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhardt, Maggie Gillenhall etc... CLAP ! CLAP! CLAP! Beats Mamma Mia! , needless to say. Actually Mamma Mia! made the preview of the House Bunny look good... it says it all.
See for yourself (and I know it is pitiful but it does make me laugh!)

Les films de Batman sont généralement classés parmi les films d’action BALABOUM mais il devrait y avoir une appellation pour les films de ce genre BZOING qui sont tous adaptés de bandes dessinées publiées par Marvel (DC COMICS POUR BATMAN... VOIR COMMENTS POUR RECTIFICATION...). De la BD au film en passant par le cartoon, il sagit d’une forme artistique à part entière et il faut reconnaitre que ces films sont plutôt jolis à regarder -le fait qu’ils rapportent des fortunes aux studios est aussi un avantage certain. Dans la série, le dernier Batman, Le Chevalier Noir est un des plus réussis. Heath Ledger est l’un des meilleurs méchants de mémoire de cinéphile GLOUPS : un soupçon de of M. (Peter Lorre) de Fritz Lang, une touche de Nosferatu de Murnau et une bonne dose de Jack de Shining de Kubrick et vous avez le joker presque parfait. Ajoutez à cela le propre talent de Heath ledger et un peu de Jerry McGuire : “you complete me”... dit le joker au police commissioner Gordon, et le crime est presque parfait! Cela dit, Batman est un formidable travail de groupe et tous les acteurs de Michael Caine à Morgan Freeman en passant par Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhardt, Maggie Gillenhall sont excellents.. My blueberry nights (and pie)

My blueberry nights by Wong Kar Wai is a mess. Dommage! I have seen all his films and I admire most of them. He is a magician and his films all have a texture, a range of colors and a flavor that make them altogether beautiful and personal. The story of My blueberry nights is very thin but that’s OK, it’s not a reason for failure. The actors are great but they don’t seem to belong. I recognized the scores of The Motorcycle diaries and In the mood for love and they definitely do not belong to this movie. In a way, it felt that the movie was a kind of jetsam flotsam can do better assignment… is it what happens when a foreign talent bows to the studios? I don’t want to turn Ang Lee’s knife into Hulk’s wound but I wonder. Even the pie looked fake. Try My blueberry pie instead!
2 lbs blueberries
2 eggs
3/4 cup all purpose flour
3/4 cup sugar
1 cup heavy cream
2 teaspoons almond extract

1. Preheat oven to 400 F.
2. Butter and flour a 2 quart baking dish. Place the berries in the dish and think about what other fruit you could use for this recipe.
3. In a medium bowl, combine flour and sugar politely.
4. In a small bowl, combine eggs, cream, and almond extract. Whisk until well blended. Make a well and a wish in the center of the flour mixture. Whisk in the egg mixture to form a smooth operator. Go take a nap for 15 to 20 minutes.
5. Wake up. Pour the batter over the berries and bake until the surface looks like a lake at sunset minus the mosquitoes, 25 to 30 mins.
6. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar. Serve warm or at room temperature

My blueberry nights de Wong Kar Wai est un film raté. Too bad! J’ai vu la plupart de ses films et j’adore la plupart d'entre eux. Il est un magicien de la couleur, des images et ses films ont tous une personnalité unique. L’histoire de My blueberry nights n’a aucun interêt mais ce n’est pas ce qui dérange le plus. Les acteurs sont excellents mais ne semblent pas être dans le film. J’ai reconnu les musiques de The Motorcycle diaries et In the mood for love et ils n’appartiennent pas plus aux Blueberry nights que la musique de Gladiator n'appartiendrait à Pulp Fiction. Dans un sens, ce film est fait de bric et de broc comme s’il s’agissait d’un devoir mal fait… est-ce que c’est ce qui se produit quand un talent étranger va faire ses classes à Hollywood? Je ne veux pas remuer le couteau de Ang Lee dans la plaie de Hulk mais bon… ? Même le gâteau avait l’air faux. Essayez plutôt mon Blueberry Pie à moi !
900 grammes de myrtilles/bleuets/baies
2 oeufs
150 grammes farine
150 grammes sucre
250 ml crème liquide épaisse
2 petites cuillers d’extrait d’amande

1. Préchauffer le four à 204 degrés (four chaud).
2. Beurrer et fariner un moule rond genre je sais pas quoi mais assez profond. Placez les baies dans le plat et pensez aux autres fruits que vous pouvez utiliser pour cette recette.
3. Dans un bol moyen, mélangez la farine et le sucre poliment.
4. Dans un petit bol, mélangez les oeufs (sans la coquille), la crème et l’extrait d’amande. Fouettez jusqu’à ce que ce soit bien mixturé. Faire un puits et un voeu et mélangez le tout avec le contenu du bol moyen. Allez vous reposer 15 à 20 minutes.
5. Revenez mettre la mixture dans le plat et au four pour quelque 25 à 30 minutes et voilà !

Baby did a bad bad thing...

I saw Chris Isaak in concert last Saturday and I was so close to him I could have touched him (assuming I have ginormous long arms). He hasn’t aged a bit since the HOT video of Wicked Game

and he is still charming, funny, talented and pretty handsome. He is not as tall as I thought he was and talking about that, Chris Isaak sang the famous ‘Baby did a bad bad thing’ which was in the soundtrack of one of my favorite movies, Eyes Wide Shut by Stanley Kubrick with Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. According to my sources (non verified) Chris Isaak is going to be in a movie adaptation of one Bret Easton Ellis novel called The Informers along with a bunch of "geezers" (30+ according to -20) : Winona Ryder, Billy Bob Thornton, Mickey Rourke, etc. Hopefully it will be more memorable than his role in Little Buddha back in 1993. If not, it’s OK, we’ll always have Wicked game...

Il n’est pas aussi grand que je ne le croyais, lustucru, et en parlant de pas grand, c’est lui qui chantait ‘Baby did a bad bad thing’ dans la bande originale d’un de mes films préférés, Eyes Wide Shut de Stanley Kubrick avec Nicole Kidman et Tom Cruise. Selon mes sources (non vérifiées) Chris Isaak va jouer dans l’adaptation cinématographique du roman Bret Easton Ellis, The Informers avec une bande de "papies/mamies" (30+ selon les -20) : Winona Ryder, Billy Bob Thornton, Mickey Rourke, etc. Il faut espérer que ce sera plus mémorable que son rôle dans Little Buddha en 1993. Sinon, pas grave, on aura toujours le Wicked game pour se consoler...

Wanted

What is it about Wanted ? Its director is from the former USSR, Kazakhstan (like Borat) and his name is Timur Bekmanbetov. The movie definitely has a different flavor from your usual Marvel Comic Book adaptation. I really wanted to see a bit of Raskolnikov in the hero, Wesley Gibson (played by James McAvoy the Scottish lad of Atonement) : after all, he almost kills -with a revolver which could have been an ax- , his mean boss who could have been his landlady ! I also wanted to see a bit of Karma in Wanted : remember Matrix and how related to Buddhism the whole movie was (if you have any questions about this… feel free : I know the authority on the subject !) and the same can more or less be applied to Wanted (past events, fate, loom, weaving, destiny, awareness of the suffering caused by the destruction of life ). Wanted also has a bit of Shakespeare in it : there is definitely a hint of Hamlet in this conflict between father, son and uncle if you can believe that Sloan (Morgan Freeman) is Wesley’s uncle… a bit of a stretch maybe! What about Nirvana then? I thought there was definitely something of Nirvana in the movie since there is a definite “smells like teen spirit” atmosphere. Anyhow and in a nutshell, Angelina is great : she glows, she shines, she levitates 3000 feet above us poor simple human beings, James McEvoy is adorable and going to the movies beats the heat !
Ce que cherche Wanted ? Je ne sais pas. Son réalisateur vient du Kazakhstan comme Borat et il s’appelle Timur Bekmanbetov. Le film ne resemble en rien aux autres adaptations de bandes dessinées. J’aurais aimé voir un peu de Raskolnikov dans le héros, Wesley Gibson (joué par le charmant et écossais James McAvoy de Atonement) : après tout, il assassine presque au revolver qui aurait pu être une hâche, sa méchante chef de service qui aurait pu être sa logeuse ! J’aurais aussi souhaité voir un peu d’inspiration Karma dans le film : souvenez-vous de Matrix et comme ce film est totalement inspiré du Bouddhisme (si vous avez des questions, n’hésitez-pas, je transmettrai à l’autorité sur le sujet !) et la même chose pourrait s’appliquer à Wanted (événements passés, destin, tissage, conscience de la souffrance causée par la destruction de la vie , etc.) Wanted est aussi vaguement Shakespearien : il ya un léger relent de Hamlet dans ce conflit entre père, fils et oncle si l’on admet que Sloan (Morgan Freeman) est l’oncle de Wesley’s … ce qui demande un grand effort d’imagination! Tout cela pour en arriver à Nirvana ! Il y a en effet quelque chose de Nirvana dans ce film qui baigne dans une atmosphèe tout à fait “smells like teen spirit”. Enfin et en deux mots, Angelina est sublime, elle brille, elle luit, elle plane 1500 mètres au dessus de nos pauvres têtes, il ne lui manque plus que les ailes, James McEvoy est adorable et quand il fait 46 degrés à l’ombre on est bien mieux dans une salle de cinéma que dehors !
