Indiana Jones and (fill the blanks)

So here it goes, Indiana Jones goes to (blah-blah-blah) and meets (Joe Blow so and so) who has been lost in the (blah-blah-blah) while searching for the (blah-blah-blah). Then come the bad guys who are (fill the blanks) and after many adventures, Indy puts his hand in a (blah-blah-blah), falls in a hole full of (blah-blah-blah) fights a few disgusting ugly repulsive (blah-blah-blah) has a little bit of a mild sado-masochistic fight with a blonde/redhead/brunette (pick one). The theme for the next installment is introduced and voila! Maybe the screenwriters do have some mad-lib booklet deliver to them before they start writing the screenplay. How fun!

Lee Miller : Through the mirror/A travers le miroir

Lee Miller : through the mirror (DVD) is the only documentary I know about Lee Miller and if you don’t know this extraordinary woman you should watch this film produced by the European TV channel Arte. I can’t say that it is a thorough study of the subject because it doesn’t exist to this day and I don’t think it will ever happen for this woman was definitely larger than life and words. She happens to be one of the women I most admire for her talent, her beauty and the fact that she was uncontrollable -since she was born in 1907, it meant a great deal-. Her life is a novel, but in spite of many attempts, no novel has quite captured her soul. Her New-York small town childhood was tainted with various traumatisms, among them a rape, the death of a friend by drowning in front of her when she was 13, the fact that her father (who was an amateur photographer) loved to take photos of her nude to name a few. When she decided to move to New York city she almost got killed while crossing 5th avenue and was rescued by no other than Condé Nast who immediately hired her as a model. Model she was for a while before she became bored and moved to Paris (at the time of the surrealists) and came knocking on heaven’s door : Man Ray to be precise. She became a photographer, was bored again, married a rich Egyptian, moved to Cairo, was bored again, and then came the war. Lee Miller became the first woman war correspondent for Vogue which is unique in the history of fashion magazines. She was a great photographer for her photographs are the true reflection of her tormented soul. The photos she took in the Dachau concentration camp –she arrived there with the unit who liberated the camp- are amazing and important. Nevertheless and after the war, she discarded all of her photographs in shoe-boxes thrown in the attic of her country home in England and it’s only after her death that her son , Anthony Penrose, found them and started asking questions about this mother he never quite knew and was, according to him and without any kind of resentment, not much of a mother ! She finally gave up photography altogether and started developing a passion for …cooking ! Cooking creative meals for her surrealist friends became more than a hobby, she even won competitions. Her dinner parties were legendary but there is unfortunately not much literature on the subject: I would love to see a Lee Miller cookbook published one day!
Lee Miller is the only photographer I know who was fantastic on both sides of the camera ! There has been some exhibits about her work over the years and according to my sources the San Francisco museum of art will have a retrospective some time soon. Lee Miller, the most oblique personnality in the world of photography always wanted to be photographed on her best profile… all those who knew her mention this fact yet, none of them noticed that the profile was perhaps the key to this mysterious woman, one side of the story !
For those of you who are interested in Lee Miller :
The lives of Lee Miller by Anthony Penrose
Lee Miller’s war by Anthony Penrose and David E. Sherman
and in French: L’oeil du silence by Marc Lambron (a not so good attempt at turning one chapter of Lee’s life into a novel).
As for movies… Ingrid Bergman would have been perfect, even a younger Catherine Deneuve could have done a great job. But the actress who could portray Lee Miller today is, in my opinion, not born yet ! Naomi Watts perhaps ? Yes definitely !
The lives of Lee Miller by Anthony Penrose
Lee Miller’s war by Anthony Penrose and David E. Sherman
Oui absolument Naomi !

Le silence de Lorna

The Dardenne brothers are probably my favorite directors but I hesitate to recommend their movies which can lead to profound sadness and despair ! I never take movies personally so I deeply admire the work they have done with La Promesse (96), Rosetta (99) Le fils (02) and L’enfant (05). These films are painful to watch but the Dardenne brothers have given a voice to those who need to be heard the most –illegal immigrants of all countries, unite!- and have been finding humanity in the least expected corners of the world and the heart. I admire their integrity, their intelligence and their sensibility. They are presenting a new film at the Cannes festival : The silence of Lorna and even though it’s going to be a while before I have a chance to see it, I can bet that it is an important film. I also hope that the Palme d’Or will go to them (they already got it twice: once for Rosetta and once for L’enfant).
Many people refuse to watch their films because they are depressing and at the antipodes of entertainment. I can understand that and I don’t think the Dardenne brothers expect to have people rush to their movies with buckets of popcorn and a date to kiss in the dark. I do not know if their films can be described as “social” either. All I know is that they challenge my tolerance level and humble me. In “La promesse” which could be one of my favorite movies… they portray a teenager and his father who is a monster -for there is no other word to describe someone who makes a living cashing on the misery of immigrants-. The Dardenne brothers manage somehow to make him human if only because he loves his son. This love is the crack in the armor, it’s probably what gives the son some humanity too, enough to keep a promise and anyway all I can say is that you should see the film. I find it more depressing to watch Pretty Woman for example which is an insult to my intelligence ! It takes a great dose of contempt and cynicism to trap a public into buying such an inept story ! Don’t tell me I cannot compare : I can and I do. Making people weep and feel good by believing there is such a thing as a knight in shining armor who can rescue a cheap prostitute who happens to have Julia Roberts look is so ridiculous that I cannot understand how zillions of people bought it.
But back to the Dardenne brothers: I have to admit that I wouldn’t watch their films over and over again. Once might be enough because it stays with you. Some scenes. you never forget. Whoever has seen a Dardenne film knows what I am talking about. It is not fun by all means but it is important and beautiful.

Not only is the Brangelina tribe settled for now in the South of France but Indiana Jones is going to have its « world exclusive premiere » at the Cannes festival with "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull". Meanwhile, the prestigious Musée du Quai Branly in Paris is presenting one of the few existing crystal skulls to celebrate the event (from May 20th til Sept 7th).
The movie might be an entertainment park ride kind of deal … but in case you wonder about the skull, you may pay a visit to the museum and find out more about it : it is probably of Aztec origin and represents Mictlantecuhtli or Mictlancíhuatl who belongs to Mictlan, the kingdom of the dead. There should be 13 authentic skulls in existence (let’s forget about the tsunami of fake made in China skulls which are going to flood and pollute the planet and the bedrooms of our children post-movie release). A few of the real skulls have been legally stolen by museums : the Paris one (Museum of quai Branly), the London one (British Museum), the Smithsonian Institution one (also the biggest since it’s in America !) and nine other skulls belonging to individuals : the destiny, Sha-Na-Ra, Max, Mayan, so called E.T (source of Spielbert inspiration ?) , amethyst, reliquary cross and crystal rose ones. According to a legend, if you align the 13 skulls (there is a 13th skull that is supposed to represent the earth) on the last day of the mayan calendar - december 21, 2012 – it will keep the earth from tipping over. I thought it had already happened but never mind, the worst is yet to come !

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull est la quatrième édition de la série à succès.

THE POSSIBILITY OF A DISASTER

Michel Houellebecq (pronounce “où est le bec”!) is working on the movie adaptation of The possibility of an island (La Possibilité d’une ile), his novel about clones and a nasty main character named Daniel. From what I have seen on the promotion site :
http://www.lapossibiliteduneile-lefilm.com/michelhouellebecq/index.php?2007/08/27/7-premiere-video
it has definite Durassic accents i.e from Marguerite Duras: French author who had the all world in awe thanks to her unique and almost minimalist style. I suspect that she was most of the time “saving words” since she was indeed extremely cheap… but this is a very personal analysis of Duras who has (voluntarily or by accident) created several masterpieces unlike Michel Houellebecq who has surfed the zeitgeist wave with success. Until recently when Michel H.’s own mother, Lucie Ceccaldi a 83 years old hippie harpy who is nothing like - came back from the dead in order to torture her famous son with the publication of a memoir “L’innocente”. Sounds like schadenfreude, and it is but that will teach him to bury his mother alive! Why in the world did he tell a journalist that she was dead? He was perhaps talking metaphorically but as a writer, he should have known better. The publication of this gunfight at OK corral of a memoir is nothing but a slap in the face of the ungrateful offspring and proves to be a major embarrassment for MH who hasn’t spoken since the release of Mommy dearest’s book.
What makes this publishing coup interesting is :
1- It is the first time the mother of an author who has spent many pages whining about her fights back.
2- Her lawyer is Jacques Vergès (see blog entry from 4/11/08 )
3- Students in literature and psychology will have some unique material to work with since nasty mothers are common in literature but none of them struck back as far as I know.
As for the movie in the making (it is in post-production), I can tell you that Benoit Magimel plays in it and that he has never looked more puffy and sad. I also know that Arielle Dombasle is part of the cast ! Could be funnier than the “chtis” come to think of it !

http://www.lapossibiliteduneile-lefilm.com/michelhouellebecq/index.php?2007/08/27/7-premiere-video

AUDREY TAUTOU IS COCO (AND COQUETTE)

Audrey Tautou is about to launch on a Piaf mission with Coco! I guess that the success of “La Vie en Rose” and what it did to Marion Cotillard is inspiring enough so that a life of Coco Chanel pre-little piqués, tailleurs, molletons and number 5 is in the works. Audrey Tautou deserves a run on the red carpet too! “Coco Avant Chanel” will be directed by Anne Fontaine and is in production. From Coco Chanel’s tragic childhood in an orphanage to the salons of the rue Cambon, this is indeed movie material. Audrey Tautou is probably not France’s best actress but she is a very nice clothes-hanger, she’ll slip into Coco just fine. There was more talk recently about the Loris Azzaro (http://www.lorisazzaro.com/) dresses Audrey Tautou wore in Priceless than about the movie itself. It is true that for movie lovers, clothes have a certain appeal. The sweater worn by Cameron Diaz in the otherwise silly The Holiday has made more adepts than the film itself (and I’m afraid to admit that I am leading the group...)
I have been told that the way Meryl Streep wore her shawl in Out of Africa became a trend a while back. I loved Kristin Scott-Thomas desert’s outfit in The English Patient when others drooled over her white dress in the scene of the restaurant in Cairo.
Yes, we girls are not always focused on the big picture. I just wonder if the fact that I am looking at clothes, objects and interior design is not a sign that the movie doesn’t work for me. Probably so. Sex and the city is coming soon and knowing that the show favorite designers are :
• Manolo Blahnik
• Richard Tyler
• Jimmy Choo
• Dolce & Gabbana
• Fendi
• Dior
• Blumarine
• Chanel
• Chloe
• Prada
• Roberto Cavalli

be ready for placement product madness! The only appeal of Sex and the city being New York in the background, I am sure you’ll have plenty of time staring at the clothes and how easy it is to take them off if need be. We have been hammered by the promotion for this film so much that it is actually the last thing on my list of otherwise terribly exciting things to do in the Summer (not) but we’ll see.

• Manolo Blahnik
• Richard Tyler
• Jimmy Choo
• Dolce & Gabbana
• Fendi
• Dior
• Blumarine
• Chanel
• Chloe
• Prada
• Roberto Cavalli
A suivre...
