DAN IN REAL LIFE

Not much is real in Dan’s life but it’s not the point. The point is to meet the deadline for a holiday movie that will make you laugh and cry. Unfortunately, this one doesn’t do the trick. All the ingredients are there and yet the soufflé comes out flat. Juliette Binoche glows, but she always does. Other than that, she fits in the movie like a wild orchid in a field of Idaho potatoes. One of the scenarists is responsible for writing “What’s eating Gilbert Grape” and “Pieces of April” so let’s assume that the other one is moonlighting for Hallmark cards because the dialogues strangely reminded me of the sorry, happy recovery, congratulations cards one may find at the supermarket.

Pas grand chose de réel ni de palpitant dans cette recette drame des familles cuite à point mais qui tombe à plat. On se fout comme de l’an 40 de ce pauvre Dan même si sa famille délivre les bons mots par paquet de 50. Pourquoi Juliette Binoche s’est-elle égarée dans cette gentille niaiserie? Elle est magnifique et rayonnante, et comme d’habitude la caméra l’aime, c’est clair. Cela n’explique pas pourquoi elle joue ce personnage qui de toutes façons sonne totalement faux. On la croirait copiée/collée dans un univers qui n’est le sien… ET come home!
