STARS WANTED

Once you’ve seen movie stars behaving like you and me and looking as common as the next person in the elevator it’s kind of hard to maintain the Glamour image Hollywood has always relied on by cultivating the aura of mystery around its precious assets. How to escape the images these days? They are all over the internet, printed on tabloids, kids want to be paparazzi when they grow-up, there is no way you can escape seeing Julia looking like a Mom, George sipping his coffee, Angie picking up the kids. For those of us who do not give a damn, they are certainly not spending their time at the Multiplex so the people who do care about movie stars care less and less because there are less and less of them and so few actors to start with in the US. No back-up plan for Hollywood unless they start raising a new kind of species : the one that hides from the media and only shines on the screen. I cannot think of anyone fitting the profile these days. It probably explains why the studios cannot count on a big name only… if people have seen the name and face associated with it too much, the movie will bomb at the box office. Americans have a strange relationship with their “stars” and we know how they love to destroy what they love. It used to be brutal, but now, it is an ongoing process, killing them softly by showing them a bittoo much, from the wrong angle, doing the wrong thing. Maybe it’s the uprising of the actors and the vanishing of the stars… a new era. Would be nice if we could have both.

Une fois que vous les avez vu acheter des poireaux au supermarché, boire leur coca à même la canette ou pire se mettre les doigts dans le nez, il est difficile de les prendre pour des Stars… ils sont plutôt comme vous et moi. Hollywood a bien du mal à maintenir son aura de mystère et de glamour autour des stars d’aujourd’hui. Comment échapper aux images ces jours-ci? Impossible, entre les paparazzi et la presse people, les seuls qui échappent aux images sont ceux qui au depart n’en ont pas grand chose à faire donc pas le public visé par les studios, celui qui achètera des billets et du pop-corn. Alors il y a de moins en moins de stars du calibre des Marilyn ou des Ava Gardner et pas tellement d’acteurs en général, à moins d’aller voir du côté des films indépendants. Pas de plan B pour Hollywood sauf si les studios commencent à faire pousser de nouvelles graines de stars, belles et discrètes et prêtes à inonder les écrans de leur aura magique. Les Américains ont une curieuse relation avec leurs stars et adorent détruire leurs idoles à moins qu’elles ne s’autodétruisent toutes
seules, ce qui arrive assez fréquemment. Peut-être est-ce que nous assistons à un phénomène nouveau : la mort des stars, la renaissance des acteurs mais ce serait bien si on pouvait avoir les deux.
