There will be blood is a great film with oscars written all over it. DDL and Paul Dano (the gloomy teenager of Little Miss Sunshine) will win Oscars or I will drop one Trouble out my name! The film is long but so is Gone with the wind and it’s a much better film than the latter anyway. I guess it’s better not to know too much about it before you go see the movie (unless you’ve read Oil by Upton Sinclair and you already know the story). One thing I did realize in this film is that whatever Daniel Day-Lewis does is fine with me! Spoken like a true fan but it is a little problematic because I guess I can never forget it is Daniel Day Lewis delivering one his great performances on the screen and whether he is running half naked as the last of the Mohicans or butchering people left and right in The gangs of New york or crippled by disease in My left foot, I love the guy. He could be playing a serial killer or a Republican and I would still find reasons to forgive him ! So here it is, I have a weakness for Daniel Day-Lewis, the same way I have an allergic reaction to Philip Seymour-Hoffman who is also a great actor. I know the reason though: part of it is physical (but one can argue that DDL’s crooked nose, receding hairline and wiry figure are not that appealing) but most importantly I cannot dissociate Hoffman from the first movie I saw with him : Happiness by Todd Solontz. Some images I am afraid just stick to you and I am kind of sorry to use this image, if you’ve seen the film, you’ll know why. Some people I know have the same kind of allergic reaction towards Glenn Close (another great actress) because of Fatal Attraction (AKA The Rabbit punch). In a way an actor always projects a little bit of his soul on the screen. I am pretty sure Day-Lewis is a great person and part of his goodness, his sensitivity and his intelligence creeps into his characters. Recently and in a NYT magazine article, he said : “Whatever I see in the character, I first try to see in life”. I guess I like the way he sees life.
There will be blood est un excellent film à Oscars. DDL et Paul Dano (l’adolescent de Little Miss Sunshine) gagneront les Oscars d’interprétation ou je laisse tomber un des Trouble de mon nom! Le film est long mais Autant en emporte le vent l'est aussi et There will be blood est bien meilleur que la saga du Sud. Il est peut-être conseillé de ne pas trop connaitre le fil de l’histoire (à moins d’avoir lu le livre d’Upton Sinclair sur lequel le film est basé). Une chose est sûre en ce qui me concerne: Daniel Day-Lewis peut faire n’importe quoi et je le trouve toujours fantastique ! On pourrait me prendre pour une groupie et ce n’est pas très loin de la réalité parce que il peut courir à moitié nu comme le Dernier des Mohicans, trucider les gens au couteau dans Gangs of New York ou n’avoir que son pied pour s’exprimer dans My left foot et je le trouve toujours sublime forcément sublime! Il pourrait interprêter un tueur en série ou même un Républicain que je trouverai toujours des raisons de l’excuser ! Alors voilà, j’ai un faible pour Daniel Day-Lewis à peu près autant que j’ai une allergie à Philip Seymour-Hoffman qui est aussi un excellent acteur. Mais ça, c’est la faute à Todd Solontz. J’ai eu le malheur de voir Seymour-Hoffman la première fois à l’écran dans Happiness et cette image m’est, si je puis m’exprimer ainsi (ceux qui ont vu le film comprendront) restée collée dans la tête. Il y aussi l’aspect physique mais cet aspect est complètement subjectif surtout qu’on ne peut pas dire que DDL soit particulièrement joli à regarder avec son nez tordu et sa dégaine de grand duduche. Non le problème est un problème d’images que je ne peux pas dissocier. J'en connais qui ont ce type de réaction à Glenn Close à cause de Fatal Attraction connu aussi sous le nom du Coup du lapin. Et qu’est-ce que le cinéma sinon des images? Un acteur doit toujours mettre un peu de son âme dans un film. Je suis persuadée que Day-Lewis est un homme dont la beauté et l’intelligence passent dans ces personnages, qu’il le veuille ou non. Récemment, dans un interview avec le New York Times magazine, il disait : “Ce que je vois dans un personnage, j’essaie de le voir dans la vie.” J’aime la façon dont il voit la vie.
